The West Bengal Higher Education Department has issued an official notification for the appointment of permanent Vice-Chancellors at 36 universities across the state. The notification follows a recent Supreme Court order mandating a transparent and structured process for these appointments. Prospective candidates have until August 23 to submit their applications for these prestigious positions.
The Supreme Court had previously directed the formation of a search committee to oversee the selection of Vice-Chancellors. The committee, led by retired Chief Justice U U Lalit, is responsible for ensuring a fair and thorough process. The committee will review applications and forward the names of three shortlisted candidates for each university to the Chief Minister.
Before this notification, the appointment of Vice-Chancellors was handled directly by the Governor, who had already appointed several individuals to key positions.
